Special Comment:New Age Beef + Historical Weed Session
So I guess nowadays beef is a relative term, it can mean a couple of different things. The most hysterical beef I have heard of this year though has to be the Soulja Boy vs Ice-T controversy. Just to give you a quick rundown in case you don’t know:Ice-T blasted Soulja Boy first on a mixtape from DJ Cisco, telling him to “eat a dick” and blaming him for single handed killing hip-hop. SB shot back in a video clip where he basically oscillated between calling Ice-T a legend and the John McCain of Hip Hop, a cranky ass old man who needs to shut up and retire. Then Ice-T apologized for telling him to eat a dick, but still said his music is garbage.
Now a couple of Hip Hop icons from both the old school and new school have weighed in on Soulja’s boys behalf. Both Kanye and Krs have publicly defended Soulja Boy. Krs actually did a whole episode of rap city with Soulja Boy where he broke down a lot of the history about Hip Hop to the young man, and you know what was funny, Soulja Boy listened, and was respectful and thankful for the knowledge. He said two things that really got my attention. First of all he said that, to him, in his life experience, 50 Cent was old school. He said “In Da Club” came out when he was 11. He had no exposure to or understanding of the old school. The second thing he said was, of all the people who dissed him or talked negative about him, no body bothered to teach him about the history of the music or the forefathers of the art-form until Krs did it that day on Rap City.
So I guess the reason I come down on Soulja Boy’s side on this one is this, his music is terrible. But is it his fault if all he had to listen to when he was growing up was terrible music? I grew up listening to Tribe and PE and yes Ice-T, so I was exposed to a variety of thought in my music. Think about Hip Hop post “In Da Club”. Has there been a lot that gets played on the radio or BET that you think would be good to raise a kid on. So who’s fault is that? Is it the children’s responsibility to educate themselves, or the elders responsibility to educate our youth? And even more so, were our elders neglecting our youth while they got rich acting on TV glorifying bullshit ass cops that they used to claim they wanted to kill? Just some food for thought.
And now for Historical Weed Sessions
Ganja Soma A+ (from an Amsterdaam Coffee Shop)
Setting Blue Lagoon (Port Antonio, Jamaica)
Participants
Robert Nesta Marley O.M. (So much things to say)
Yusuf Islam (and if the brother won’t blow, Cat Stevens, cause you know HE got weeded. Plus him and Bob could play guitar together)
Soma (The guy that engineered the weed for today’s session, plus other greatest hits you’ll see in future sessions)
The wisdom in that cypher would be blinding!!! (And doesn’t Soma look a lot like Yusuf Islam! That might be weird, especially if Soma rocks his dreads like a turban and Yusuf actually wears a turban. But then again when you’re off of that A+ everybody sounds like Bob Marley, so I’m sure it’ll be ok)
