Mixtape Review: MURS-I’m Innocent
He’s making a big push right now. He’s got the album, the tour, and like it’s part of the manual for success, the free internet mixtape making the rounds. This installment dubbed I’m Innocent is mixed by DJ Love Killed Kurt, which has to be one of the top ten all time DJ names. Murs maintains his formula in this mixtape format:West coast sounds with creative rhymes and enormous self-confidence/self-deprecation. What about that can’t you get behind.
Murs isn’t perfect, he’s got some ways about him that seem to agitate people. I myself under-estimated him for a long time. I wasn’t fully convinced until I saw him perform live. I guess he suffered from RedCafe syndrome, I got wore out on his style from playing too much playstation. But live and in color, he’s sick. And once you get Murs, you can’t help but dig Murs. He’s his own man, and his spit is honest, something you gotta respect. And plus, it’s easy to make fun of how he skips around the stage, but it’s hard to pay close enough attention to hear the clever things he does with his rhymes. He said, “I’m dying to be different, down to die to make a difference, music for the movement with a message uplifting, went from set trippin, to trips around the world.” For real.
So since all you need to do is spend about 37 seconds of your day to download it, I would say that this mixtape is a very solid commodity in this shaky market, the value of the song “I’m Innocent” produced by 9th Wonder is enough to justify your investment alone. Bonus, there are 19 other songs, some old, some new, some better than others, but all free rounding out this mixtape. So got get it already!
