Presented by Russell Simmons and mixed by DJ Green Lantern, Yes We Can! is a mixtape that could only have happened during this particular presidential election. Can you picture a musical collaboration for a John Kerry or Hillary Clinton presidency? Maybe a mashup from Elton John and Fleetwood Mac, but definitely not a Green Lantern tape featuring the likes of Nas, Jay-Z, and Kanye.

But this year, something different is happening in American politics. The Hip Hop generation has finally come into it’s own, and is ready to begin making decisions about the future of this nation, and who will lead us into that future. And overwhelmingly, we support Barack. Now, it is true that there are a couple of well respected artists who haven’t joined the bandwagon. Dead Prez, for one, are not fans of Mr. Obama. As they said recently at Rock the Bells, “fuck anyone who wants to claim the title of so-called president of these United States, we ain’t gassed up over a black face in the white house.” And Daddy Yankee actually went so far as to endorse John McCain. I guess they share a common love for gasolina.

But pretty much everyone else has spoken loud and clear, and they’ve voiced their support for an Obama presidency. The mixtape itself is full of inspirational quotes from Barack, as well as songs that highlight the level of interest and activism that the people are showing this year towards politics. And if everything goes right, it will provide us with something dope to celebrate to on that first Tuesday night in November.

For those readers who are registered, don’t forget to vote. You don’t want to miss out on the opportunity to have a hand in this historical occasion. If you aren’t registered to vote, get on it. Today is the last day to register here in Cali, and each state has it’s own rules regarding deadlines. So check up on it, and get up on it. And get out there and help bring Barack Obama to the white house.
