Mixtape Monday: Evidence-The Layover Mixtape
Born Michael Perretta, Evidence is a rapper, producer, and member of seminal West Coast Hip Hop group Dilated Peoples. Besides being an overall defender of Hip Hop culture, (Ev also breaks, grafs, and anything else deemed the 5th element) he is a talented performer with a highly consistent track record. His first solo album was called The Weatherman and it was released last year. He’s already got his second solo album called The Layover EP ready to drop later this month, and the preview mixtape is here now. This brother is a hard worker.
The mixtape is hosted by DJ Skee, and is very similar in format to the Murs mixtape. You’ve got some stuff off the new album, some unreleased stuff, some custom freestyles, and some classic material you might have heard already, but if you haven’t, gives you a good idea of what you’ve missed.
I love this tape, and I can tell I am really looking forward to the full EP’s release later this month. It rides like a classic auto. He’s got incredible beats as always, and the verses are on point. He’s got some nice guest spots and the whole thing is just dope from front to back. Last week I profiled a Tony Touch tape, and it’s ironic because he’s the one who first exposed me to Evidence and Dilated Peoples through one of his mixes. Ever since I heard Ev drop that line, “Fuck rain, I drop raid on your parade”, I’ve been a fan. His voice might have changed, but his ability to craft a gem has only gotten more precise.
And now, just a quick update on the column. There has been a change in the mixtape policy. If you belong to the mailing list already, you will continue to get your approved mixes as usual. If you want to join the mailing list, just send an email to hiphoplivesmixtapes@gmail.com, and you will begin receiving digital copies of the mixtapes I preview here. Now recently, I’ve previewed a couple mixtapes where the DJ’s have requested that you specifically go to their website to download them. And since we get em free anyway, I’m inclined to oblige. In those situations, instead of a rar file, you will receive a link to the website where you can download the files. Sorry for the inconvenience. Also, I’ve got a homie who is working up an audio player for the site, so hopefully soon you will be able to sample a song from the artists I cover directly from this site. Keep checkin back, and thanks for the comments. I’ve gotten more comments on the Producer Profile I wrote on Mark Batson than anything else, so I wanna spend a special shout-out to all the readers who added to that post, and I encourage all of you to go read their comments. It sounds to me from what they say, that not only is our man Batson one of the finest producers in the game, but also a really deep cat. I’m out.
