Guilty Pleasure:Death Cab For Cutie
Now keep in mind this is a Hip Hop blog. If it were an indie rock blog, Death Cab For Cutie would never be a guilty pleasure. But if I was ever caught rolling through the Bronx with the lyrics “I will posses your heart” plaintively wailing out of my ear phones, it might make me a wee bit nervous. But quiet as it’s kept, when I’m home and nobody is around, occasionally you could find me rocking to the boys from Bellingham.
I’ll give you my reasons why.
1. As Hip Hop heads, we love it when people take odd, unique sounds and make them rhythmical and melodic. Timbaland rocked my world when he used a baby coo as a snare on “Are You That Somebody?”, and DCFC made me rethink the hipness of the glockenspiel on We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes.
2. They got put on off a demo made in a basement.
3. The group’s name is a throwback reference to one of the only songs from the soundtrack to The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour that wasn’t by The Beatles. That would be like me coming out with a group called Words From the Nutcracker.
4. They rock stocking caps with brims on them.
5. They always leave freaky instrumental bridges in their songs that the inner Lupe Fiasco in all of us yearns to rhyme over.
The group has released six studio albums, four ep’s, and one old school basement demo. For more info, check out their myspace page you lazy such and such.
